Description

In March 2022, Michael travelled the length of the River Tigris through Iraq to get a sense of what life is like in a region of the world that once formed the cradle of civilisation, but that in recent times has witnessed turmoil and appalling bloodshed. It was a journey of sharp, often brutal contrasts. At one moment he would be exploring the old streets of Baghdad or the ancient ruins of Babylon. At the next he would be visiting the war-torn city of Mosul, or learning about the horrific Speicher massacre in Tikrit. Now he shares the journal he meticulously kept during his trip, in which he describes the very varied places he visited, the people he met and the impressions he formed of a country that few outsiders now venture to see.

‘For much of my lifetime Iraq has been a symbol of war and destruction. Now that a tentative peace has broken out I wanted to see what happens to a country waking from a nightmare, in a land on which the first cities in the world were built. Not only was it my first time there, it was the first time I’d seen such damage and such resilience side by side. So much desperation and so much hope. I’ve never been in circumstances quite like it in all my life. Going into Iraq was, in the best sense of the word, an eye-opener.’ – Michael Palin

European Union Shipping, Taxes & Duties Terms

All orders shipped from our United Kingdom Online Shop to addresses within the European Union (EU) are handled according to your delivery location. Because your items are dispatched from outside the EU, specific tax and duty rules apply to ensure compliance with EU border customs frameworks.

1. Country Shipping & Tax

Destination CountryShipping MethodWhat You Pay at Checkout
Germany, Denmark, LuxembourgPre-Paid Duties Paid (PDDP)All-inclusive price. Local VAT and any customs fees are calculated and paid completely at checkout. No extra charges upon delivery.
All Other EU CountriesDelivery Duty Unpaid (DDU)Product and standard courier shipping fees only. You must pay all local VAT, import duties, and carrier handling fees to customs before delivery.

2. Value Added Tax (VAT) & Product Categorisation

EU cross-border laws dictate that tax rates are based on the destination country and the specific type of item being purchased:

– Books: Printed books qualify for reduced, super-reduced, or zero-rated VAT depending entirely on your delivery country (ranging from 0% to 10%),
– DVDs and Media: Physical media items are standard commercial goods and always attract your destination country’s full standard VAT rate (ranging from 17% to 27%).
– Shipping Fees: VAT on shipping fees is calculated proportionally based on what is inside the box. For mixed orders (e.g., a book and a DVD), the shipping VAT is automatically split relative to the tax values of the items.

3. Delivery Duty Unpaid (DDU) Specific Requirements

If your shipment is destined for any EU country outside of Germany, Denmark, or Luxembourg, your package will arrive under Delivery Duty Unpaid (DDU) rules:

– You are directly responsible for clearing customs and paying local Import VAT, processing duties, and courier brokerage fees upon arrival.
– The delivery agent will contact you directly to collect these charges before releasing the package. Items cannot be delivered until these border fees are cleared.

4. The €3 EU E-Commerce Item Charge

Under the current EU Customs Reform regulations, all commercial parcels entering the European Union from outside the EU (including the UK) face a mandatory flat customs duty structure designed for low-value e-commerce goods:

– What it is: A flat €3 customs duty applied to each distinct category of product in your package.
– PDDP Customers (DE, DK, LU): If this €3 charge applies to your specific items, it is calculated automatically and fully included in the total price you pay at checkout. There is nothing extra to clear upon arrival.
– DDU Customers (Rest of the EU): This €3 charge is not included at checkout. Your local customs authority or the delivering courier will calculate and collect this fee directly from you at the border alongside your local VAT.
– Will I get charged €3 per item? No. If you order 3 books because they have the same customs code, you should be charged just the one fee of €3. If you order 3 books and 1 DVD you will be charged €3 for the books and €3 for the DVD, so that will be €6 total.
– Is the new charge separate from the import duties and taxes I already pay? Yes, the €3 charge is separate from VAT and delivery fees. It is an additional flat-rate customs duty applied to items valued at €150 or less.

5. Address & Legal Accuracy

You must provide an accurate and complete delivery address during checkout. We strictly use your provided shipping location to determine whether your order qualifies for our pre-paid tax channel (PDDP) or our standard unpaid border channel (DDU). Any intentional provision of fraudulent address data to manipulate or evade local border taxation is a breach of our terms and will lead to immediate order cancellation.

Important Delivery Information

This table is a guide to delivery costs. All delivery costs are based on weight and are calculated at checkout. Some heavier or larger orders may incur extra delivery costs. If this is the case you will be contacted and asked whether you would like to pay the additional costs or cancel your order. If you are unsure or have any questions about this please contact us before you place your order.

All international deliveries usually take about 7-10 working days, although unexpected delays can sometimes happen. If you have requested a signed copy delivery may take up to 4 weeks depending on Michael’s schedule.

Any returned items will be refunded. You will be notified as soon as the refund has been processed. If would like an exchange, you will need to place a new order.

Please Note: If your country is not listed, please contact us for a shipping quote.

EU Customs Costs

Since the UK left the EU, all of our EU orders are sent out DDU (Delivery Duty Unpaid) which means your order may be subject to import duties and taxes which are applied when your delivery reaches its destination. Unfortunately we have no control over these charges and we cannot tell you the amount you will have to pay.

Any import duties that need paying at the delivery destination, are not included in the price of our products or delivery costs and will be payable by you. Any import duty or tax costs will be invoiced directly to you from the courier. Before placing your order we advise you to contact your local customs authority to determine any duty costs that might be payable once your order has reached it’s destination.

New EU Charges From 1st July 2026

From 1st July 2026 the EU is ending its duty-free threshold for low-value parcels. A flat customs duty of €3 will be applied to every item you purchase. This will be in addition to any other import taxes you may have to pay. The EU describes the measure as temporary, ahead of broader EU customs reform.

How much will I have to pay?

A €3 per item customs duty will apply to all parcels valued under €150 entering the EU.

A mixed-product order with 3 item types carries €9 in duty.

Further changes are expected November 2026, including potential additional handling fees.

Will I get charged €3 per book/DVD?

If you order 3 Different books/DVDs, because they are different unique items, the €3 charge applies to each book/DVD, meaning a €9 customs fee on the books/DVDs.

If your 3 books/DVDs are exactly identical (the same title and edition), it will be treated as one item type and you will only be charged €3 total for the books or DVDs.

Additional Fees: Depending on your destination country and courier, you may also be subject to domestic handling or courier processing fees (e.g., an Post charges a €6.95 admin fee in Ireland).

VAT: You may also need to pay local country VAT, though many EU countries apply a 0% VAT rate to physical books.

Is the new charge separate from the import duties and taxes I already pay?

Yes, the €3 charge is completely separate from VAT and delivery fees. It is an additional flat-rate customs duty applied to items valued at €150 or less.

How do I pay?

Your delivery service will contact you requesting payment before your parcel is delivered.

Deliveries to Norway: If you are ordering from Norway, and the weight of your order is over 2kg, you may be asked for your PID number, and there may be an extra postage charge to pay.
