Product Description
Sometime in the future, a clerk at the all-powerful Ministry of Information sticks to his ideals and ends up crushed by the system in this half comedy, half horror story from former ‘Monty Python’ animator Terry Gilliam. Like Orwell’s novel ‘1984’, which it echoes, the future is seen from a 1940’s perspective. Jonathan Pryce stars, with Robert De Niro making a cameo appearance as suspected terrorist Harry Tuttle. Michael says:
“As I’d worked with Terry Gilliam on his two previous films – Jabberwocky and Time Bandits – he offered me the part of Jack Lint in Brazil . I was delighted to have a chance to play a baddie and Terry and I liked the idea of the villain appearing to be a rather charming, well-respected man with kids, and not an obviously nasty psychopath. Hence the scene with Jack’s daughter, played by Terry’s daughter Holly, to emphasise that he was a family man.
Late in the casting process Terry heard that Robert de Niro was interested and he asked him to pick any part he wanted. De Niro plumped for Jack Lint, and Terry, bless him, said that he couldn’t offer him that as his friend Mike was doing it. So De Niro ended up playing the plumber! I was a huge fan of De Niro, and one of the great moment’s of my career was to be shot by him. In the movie, you understand!”
